Nilda
Callanaupa is one of our international guests for The Bothwell
SPINin 2007. Nilda and her family live in Cusco,
Peru, high in the Andes mountains.
Nilda
is Project Coordinator of The Centre for Traditional Textiles
of Cusco. The aim of the Centre is to preserve and celebrate
Andean textiles and to assist today's generation to carry
on a tradition practised for more than 2000 years. Over that
time thousands of patterns, techniques, layouts and styles
associated with weaving have evolved. The symbolism and significance
of Peruvian textiles is studied and preserved and families
are assisted to create a market for their textiles. Many of
these techniques are unknown outside of Peru. Spinning, dyeing
and knitting are also features of traditional Peruvian textile
culture.
We are
very excited to have Nilda as our guest. Nilda's expertise
in Inca textiles and culture is recognised internationally.
She is very keen to be part of The SPINin and
to be able to demonstrate and speak to the public about the
unique Peruvian culture, textile history and contemporary
practice.
In addition
Nilda will be offering workshops in Bothwell prior to the
event. Full details of the workshops, cost and bookings will
be available in the near future.
