Sonja Hindrum
Sonja Hindrum studied at RMIT in Melbourne with a degree in
Fashion Design majoring in fashion history, textile science
and fashion illustration.
Sonja has
had some of her small textile sculptures exhibited in the Tasmanian
Museum and Art Gallery. She was invited to participate in the
Rococo Revolution, Melbourne, as a designer and artist and exhibited
pieces in the Women's Gallery, Carlton.
Her fashion
work has also appeared in Vogue Australia, Australian Fashion
Week, Australian Gown of the Year for which the works
toured Australasia, the Dupont Awards and has graced the
catwalks of numerous other fashion events.
As a costume
designer Sonja has worked for TasDance and choreographer Natalie
Weir. She designed and created costumes for the production of
Treasured Island for Ten Days on the Island then again with
Weir and designer Greg Clarke, on the production Fair Game,
also performed at Ten Days on the Island. Sonja also designed
costumes for Ripple Effect, which featured works by Graeme Murphy
and toured regional Victoria. In addition, she designed and
created costumes for choreographer Neil Adams piece'
The Darkling' in this production, which celebrated 21 years
of excellence in contemporary dance.
Sonja has
designed and constructed Dreamtime costumes for the Yulara Indigenous
Cultural Centre at Uluru in the Northern Territory and children's
costumes for the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart.
Her other
costume design work has been with Director Jeff Hockley on productions
of The Mikado and Into the Woods and Michelle Cripps on the
production of Fiddler on the Roof. Sonja recently delivered
workshops on textiles and costume design for Women Moving Arts
and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.
As a textile
artist, Sonja exhibited with three other Tasmanian artists as
part of The Felt Room in the Sidespace Gallery of the Salamanca
Arts Centre in December 2004. Her work has also appeared at
the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and the Academy Gallery
at the School of Visual and Performing Arts, Launceston. Her
work also featured as 'First of the Month' Designer at
the Design Centre of Tasmania, Launceston, in October and November
2005. Sonja's work has also enjoyed national and international
exposure through featuring in the journals Textile Fibre Forum
and Echoes, the journal of the International Feltmakers Association.
