Sheep’s Wool
Proudly Sponsored by Ashford Handcrafts
THE SPINin's LONGEST THREAD CONTEST is an international contest inaugurated in 1986 for the Longest threads of raw sheep’s wool, hand spun and plied to weigh 10 grams. The record for the longest thread is recognised by The Guinness Book of Records. Through the spinning of a thread of raw wool, spinners throughout the world are linked in friendship and greater understanding and encouraged to improve the length and quality of the spinning.
Individual Entries
There are four sections:
A. The Longest Thread of raw wool hand spun on a spinning wheel and plied to 2 ply from at least 10 grams of raw wool
B. The Longest Thread of raw wool hand spun with a hand propelled spindle, and plied to 2 ply from at least 10 grams of raw wool.
C. Junior Spinners Contest – The Longest Thread of raw wool hand spun on a spinning wheel and plied to 2 ply from 10 grams of raw wool. This is in two parts
a. C10 For spinners 10 years and under or
b. C16 For spinners 16 years and under
D. This section is for those who wish to participate in the FRIENDSHIPthread but do not wish their thread to be measured. These threads will be donated towards a “Friendship Article” which will be given to charity or sold and the funds donated to charity. Entry in the FRIENDSHIPthread is free and the spinners will be recognised in the project documentation
Group Entries:
Individual entries in each section above can be entered as a component of an overall group or guild entry. The name of the group must be included on each entry form. A prize is awarded to the person submitting the longest thread from within the first three groups with the most entries. Individual entries within a group are still considered for all other applicable awards.
Prizes and Awards
Prizes are awarded in each section including group entries. Prizes or awards are made for the longest Tasmanian, thread, the longest Australian thread and the longest thread from each country as well as the overall longest thread submitted. Personal best certificates are awarded to all new entrants.
Instructions and notes
Please enclose with your ball of wool, a small staple of washed fleece and approximately 20 cm of the washed spun wool which you have entered. These are used as samples on your certificate when the threads are displayed.
If your thread looks like sewing cotton or finer please wind it around a core rather than using a ball-winder. Remember to weigh the core separately. These fine threads do not always pull freely from the centre.
The threads of winning competitors will be returned with their prizes and results.
Great wheels and charkas are considered to be wheels rather than spindles as they have a drive band.
Please do not use fibre from more than one fleece within a single entry.
Threads spun with motorized tools will not be accepted.
The Bothwell SPINin Longest Thread Rules
1. Only ONE entry per person per section.
2. Thread to be hand spun and plied on either a wheel OR spindles depending on section entered.
3. Naturally coloured or white raw wool from a single fleece can be used.
4. Thread to be presented in a ball, WASHED to weigh no less than 10 grams.
5. Should the thread break during measuring through insufficient strength, measuring ceases at that point.
6. The weighing, measuring and recording will be witnessed.
7. Scales will be checked by the Tasmanian Government’s Department of Innovation, Science and Research, prior to weighing.
8. Yarn will be measured through International SPINin's measuring device equipped with an automatic counter.
9. The length of the thread for 10 grams is arrived at by taking the total length and total weight of the ball and calculating as for 10 grams. This calculation is not made if the ball weighs less than 10 grams
10. The judges' decision will be final
